What it tells us

An eyewitness account of the escape from Kharkiv in December 1919 and January 1920, in a freight wagon via Rostov to Novorossiysk on the Black Sea. The family story about Theodor describes exactly such a journey: by train and freight wagon, among the sick and the dead. Whether Theodor was in this wagon is not stated. What is known is that Uchtman and he knew each other.

Overal ellende!!!

What it tells us

The most important document about Theodor's arrival. It names his first addresses in the Netherlands and his Polish passport from Kharkiv, with a first visa in Constantinople. It also gives his physical description and carries his signature. It gives Lublin as his birthplace and 1899 as the year; later documents say Kharkiv, 1900. The month of the Constantinople visa has been overwritten, probably February.

This act made Theodor a Dutch citizen on 9 July 1931. The double date ‘5/17 February 1900’ gives the old Russian (Julian) and the Western calendar side by side, so he knew his Russian birth date exactly. Here his birthplace is Kharkiv, not Lublin.

What it tells us

The only document that names Theodor's parents. His father Viktor Pavlovich was a railway official and still lived in Kharkiv in 1932; his mother Theodora had already died. ‘Grigoriewa’ is almost certainly a patronymic (daughter of Grigori), not a surname. The witness, Cornelis Mols of Bussum, was probably a friend.

What it tells us

The Hilversum family card gives the exact birth dates of Gijsberta (3 March 1906) and Victor (28 June 1935) and confirms Theodor's naturalisation. The family first lived at Liebergerstraat 38 and from 15 February 1937 at Van Oldenbarneveltlaan 24, where Theodor stayed until his death. By 1942 the directory already calls him head mechanic. In 1943 he appears in the roll of the ‘zoengeld’, a levy filed under ‘measures related to the occupation’. It is the first trace of him from the war years.

What it tells us

RC Hilversum was founded in 1954 by players who no longer wanted to cycle to Naarden. Victor played in the club's very first season in the first team, as a three-quarter. In December the side featured in the paper as ‘sports team of the week’. The caption says ‘K. Tokarenko’, but a month earlier the paper lists exactly the same players with ‘V. Tokarenko’, so the K is almost certainly a typo. From 1957 to 1960 RC Hilversum won four national titles in a row. As far as the newspapers show, Victor mostly played in the second team in those years.

What it tells us

In 1955 a V. Tokarenko passed the marine engineer's certificate (A.M.) at a municipal trade school, according to a Utrecht newspaper. No other V. Tokarenko is known in the Netherlands at the time, so this is almost certainly Victor. Whether he went to sea afterwards is unknown. The trade journal Nautisch tijdschrift later lists a V. Tokarenko passing the marine engineer's diplomas A (1958) and B (1962). That is probably Victor too.

What it tells us

In 1898 an Evgraf Tokarenko (born 1852, trained at the Kharkiv Veterinary Institute, Russian Orthodox) served as army veterinarian in Lublin. He was then the only Tokarenko in the city. He cannot be Theodor's father: Evgraf's patronymic is Vasilievich, Theodor's father's is Pavlovich. He could be a relative, but this is not proven.
